I wanted to have a homebirth, but due midwives unavailability two nights in a row, I ended up going to hospital.
A hospital was the last place I wanted to go to to give birth, but it was either going to hospital or giving birth at home on my own, and I definitely wasn’t ready for that.
Thankfully, it was a quick natural birth and I was ready (and desperate) to go home the morning after.
But apparently, before the discharge you, they have to run you through an endless list of questions and pieces of “advice”.
I was absolutely exhausted and starving (as the only food available was a tea and a toast), so I was just nodding my head while the nurse was speaking, hoping that eventually she would shut up and let me out.
But then she asked: What are you planning to use as a contraception method?
My face ![]()
Well my dear, I have stitches in my vagina. I am wearing a nappy because I’m leaking blood everywhere. I feel like if I sneeze half of my organs are gonna come out of my body. And I would need to sleep for 30 hours straight to recover from the exhaustion of labour…
DO I LOOK LIKE I’M GOING TO BE IN THE MOOD FOR A QUICKIE WHEN I GET HOME?
“But you are very fertile at the moment!”
My face….
If you know me you know I’m very expressive and I just CAN’T hide what I’m feeling, but she didn’t seem to get the hint lol.
The problem with this lack of empathy and understanding is that this makes many mamas think that maybe having sex soon after birth is what they SHOULD be doing beacuse everyone else is doing it.
No mama, we don’t go home from the hospital to put the baby to sleep and have wild sex. (I mean, kudos if that’s what you felt like!).
But not feeling like having sex for a WHILE after birth is perfectly normal.
Focus on your recovery.
Papa can wait.
Giving birth is such a big deal, and sadly, in many cases it requieres surgery and it can be very traumatic if there are complications…
So REST. Heal. Listen to your body.
You have done something incredible, you deserve to prioritise yourself.![]()
I would love to hear from you mamas, what was the most inappropriate question you have been asked since you gave birth?
